Norberto Ferraras

Norberto O. Ferreras is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Latin American History at Universidade Federal Fluminense (Brazil). He is a historian of forced and indigenous labor in Latin America and the relations of this region with the International Labor Organization. He has published several articles and books on these questions, most recently La OIT y los países del Cono Sur en el period de Entreguerras (Montevideo, 2019). That book follows the discussions and mutual influence between the ILO and Latin America. During his stay at the WIGH, Norberto Ferreras will write a monograph on forced labor in natural rubber production, especially on those with forced labor (Congo, Peru, Brazil, and Liberia) during the first half of the 20th Century. This study analyzes why forced labor was the main source of workers in those cases.

Research interests: Global contemporary forms of contemporary slavery; and forced labor legislation on Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
