 João Gabriel Covolan Silva is a PhD Candidate in History at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (Italy) and a member of Lab-Mundi at the University of São Paulo (Brazil). He holds a Master's degree in History from the University of Turin (Italy) and a Bachelor's degree from the University of São Paulo. During his PhD studies, he was a Visiting PhD Student at King's College London and was awarded a Mendel Fellowship from the Lilly Library at Indiana University. His research focuses on the commercial networks between the Portuguese Atlantic and the Mediterranean in the 16th and 17th centuries, particularly examining the role of Portuguese New Christians in Italy and the influence of Tuscan merchant-bankers and their agents in Portugal and its Atlantic territories. His areas of interest include the Atlantic and Mediterranean commercial networks, the Iberian Atlantic World, and the impact of the Inquisition on Portuguese commerce.
