Andre Machado

André Roberto de A. Machado is a professor in the Department of History in UNIFESP – Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Brazil and member of LabMundi/USP. Between 2007 and 2009 he carried out postdoctoral research in CEBRAP – Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning). He has a PhD in Social History (2006) from Universidade de São Paulo. He was a vice editor-in-chief of the academic journal Almanack (www.scielo.br/alm) between 2011 and 2019.

During his stay at the WIGH, André will develop his research about indigenous compulsory labor between 1832 and 1835 in the province of Pará (roughly speaking the Brazilian Amazon). Entitled "Between heritage and reinvention: Conflicts around indigenous labor in the province of Pará in the context of the Americas (1832-35)," the research project intends to break away from an excessively regional or national perspective of the problem. It is believed that the indigenous forced labor in Pará was placed within a wider context of attempts of controlling workers in the 19th century, as verified throughout the Americas.
