Using an unconventional database of thousands of records of professional mining engineers, their locations, employment and affiliations, we show how technical networks were critical in the emergence of big corporations and powerful states. The analysis of the data also allows us to draw the beginning of the lines between modern corporations and meritocratic societies.

Working paper available by request to wigh@wcfia.harvard.edu.

Lunch is available starting at 12:30, and the talk will start promptly at 1pm.
