"Financing Slave Coffee Plantations in Imperial Brazil"
**[Gabriel Sterman](/people/gabriel-gonzalez-sterman)**, WIGH Global Fellow; PhD Candidate in History, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

*This research examines how Brazil's boom in coffee production between 1831-1850 happened during a period the traditional historiography has marked as economically "backward." Sterman argues that this view lacks a systemic approach and makes the connection between the Brazillian coffee plantations, United States firms, British banks, slave trading, and the Imperial State.*

Please register below to attend. Lunch will be available.
