"Engines of Globalization: Mapping the Expansion of Anglo-American Mining Engineers into the World, 1874-1929”
[Israel Solares](/people/israel-g-solares), Visiting Fellow, Fall 2019, WIGH; Postdoctoral Fellow, University of California, San Diego (starting January 2020)
[Ted Beatty](https://keough.nd.edu/profile/ted-beatty/), Professor of History, Keough School of Global Affairs, Notre Dame University

The talk will present a richly detailed, descriptive, and dynamic portrait of the production and global diffusion of mining expertise between 1870 and 1930. Using an unconventional database of thousands of records of professional mining engineers, their locations, employment and affiliations, we show how technical networks were critical in the emergence of big corporations and powerful states. The analysis of the data also allows us to draw the beginning of the lines between modern corporations and meritocratic societies.

Working paper available by request to <wigh@wcfia.harvard.edu>.

*Lunch is available starting at 12:30, and the talk will start promptly at 1pm.*
