"Warfare and Political Construction in West Africa: Global Issues and Dynamics."
[**Lamine Faye**](/people/lamine-faye),
Postdoctoral Fellow, Weatherhead Research Cluster on Global History; Assistant Professor of History, Cheikh Anta Diop University *This paper focuses on the political evolution of West Africa from the advent of Islam in the Sudan to the 12th century. This period marks significant changes in the Sudan, particularly in its relationships with the Sahara and North Africa. In other words, understanding the political dynamics of the Sudan during this time requires an analysis of its interactions with the Sahara and, beyond that, with North Africa. This entails examining the central role played by the military in the political and economic relationships within the Sudan, especially in the context of trans-Saharan trade.*
